Self Esteem and Anti-Social Behavior PDF Print E-mail

Self esteem plays a large part in how each of us behaves. How we feel about ourselves can affect how we interact with others and also how we live our lives. For many, a lack of self confidence causes them to become shy and withdrawn. However for others, it can cause them to act overly confident in an act to fool those around them. For these people, their behaviorism is often extremely anti-social.

Why a Lack of Self Confidence is Linked to Anti-Social Behavior

Anti-social behavior is a serious problem which is often caused by a lack of self esteem. It is a problem which affects mainly younger people aged 10-25 and it can be damaging to the local community, as well as for the actual people themselves.
The reason why people with low self confidence behave in an anti-social manner is because they are trying to impress those around them. It is a chance to fit in and so they act overly confident in an attempt to fool people into being afraid of them. It is like a survival tactic which often seems to work and to look at them you would not think that they suffered from low self esteem.
Anti-social behavior caused by low self esteem can come in many forms. It could be that the person gets addicted to alcohol or drugs in an attempt to forget about their lack of confidence. Or they could smoke earlier than usual and shout abuse at passersby. It is usually an attempt to get attention, even though they do lack self esteem.
Overall a lack of self confidence can cause a person to behave in an anti-social way as they struggle to prove themselves to those around them. So the next time that you see a group of youths behaving in an anti-social way, remember that it could be their self confidence that is driving them to behave in such a way.
